Michael Halliday and Daryl Fordyce are on target as Glentoran win 2-1 at Newry.

Goals from substitutes Michael Halliday and Daryl Fordyce saw Premiership champions Glentoran come from behind to beat Newry City.

Newry, under new boss John McDonnell, led through a 15th-minute penalty scored Emmett Friars after Johnny Taylor had handled.

Halliday directed the ball beyond keeper Andy Coleman for the equaliser in the 71st minute.

Then another sub Dean Fitzgerald set up Fordyce for the winner.

Fitzgerald played the ball in from the right side of the penalty area and Fordyce skilfully hooked in the crucial goal.

Afterwards Glentoran manager Alan McDonald admitted the champions' display could have been better.

"It was a huff and puff performance," he said.

"We conceded a soft penalty and were chasing the game a bit.

"Thankfully a couple of guys came on and made a difference.

"We tried a slightly different formation and were finding it hard to come to terms with it.

"We were attempting to be a bit more offensive coming down to Newry and it just did not work out."
