Glenavon's Mark Gracey gets a header in against Institute
A Trevor Molloy header on the hour gave Marty Quinn's side their fourth win in six games at the Riverside Stadium.
Glenavon broke the deadlock when Molloy was left unmarked at the back post to head in James Costello's cross past Gavin Cullen.
The home side had chances in the first half but efforts from Paul Brown and Kevin Ramsey failed to hit the target.
Ramsey had an opportunity to steal an equaliser in the final minutes but fired his shot wide.
Institute, who can welcome back manager John Gregg to the touchline next weekend after a three match suspension, controlled the possession in the first half but rarely troubled Andrew Plummer in the Glenavon goal.
Glenavon strikers Tony Grant and James Costello had a similarly quiet first half as the visitors were reduced to hopeful balls from the defence that were easily picked off by Paddy McLaughlin and David Obilby.
Marty Quinn's half-time words had the desired effect as Glenavon grabbed the winning goal and should have doubled their lead after 86 minutes but Willo McDonagh's effort hit the outside of the post.
Institute, who have now lost three in the their last six games, pushed for an equaliser throughout the second half and the physical presence of Brown created the majority of chances for the home side.
Brown's control and strength on the ball generated chances for Austin Friel but the midfielder struggled to make Plummer work.
