Ballymena got their first home league win of the season in an incident-packed encounter at the Showgrounds.
United's Philip Carson and Wesley Boyle of Portadown were sent-off by referee Keith Halliday after the pair clashed in the centre circle.
David Cushley fired Ballymena ahead with a 35-yard free-kick but Portadown levelled through David McCullough.
The Ports were down to nine men when Richard Clarke got a second yellow and sub Kevin Kelbie scored a late winner.
"It was nice to get on and score. The chance fell to me and that is what I am there to do - score goals," said Kelbie who had been out injured.
"Our away form has been good so now we must look to build on this home win."
