Northern Ireland's Billy McKay in action with Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson

Northern Ireland Under-21s crashed to a heavy defeat by Iceland in Tuesday's European Championship qualifier.

The visitors were 4-0 up by half-time at Coleraine with Thor Vidarsson's penalty added to by Johann Gudmundsson, Alfred Finnbogason and Rurik Gislasson.

Gudmundsson's second made it 5-1 in the second half with NI sub Josh Magennis pulling a goal back for the home side.

Gislasson and Magennis both got their second goals to leave Northern Ireland with no points after two group games.

NI manager Steve Beaglehole had been hoping to see his young charges to bounce back after losing to the Czech Republic in their opening game.

They could have gone into a fourth-minute lead but Billy McKay dragged his shot wide from a good position.

They were then rocked back on their heels in the 14th minute when, following a rash challenge by Shane Duffy on Gislasson, Vidarsson scored from the spot. Iceland stretched their lead in the 32nd minute when Gudmundsson drilled a low shot beyond Trevor Carson.

Alfred Finnbogason in the 42nd minute and Gislason two minutes later made it four before the interval. Gudmundsson found the target again in the 57th minute with Northern Ireland quickly pulling one back through livewire Magennis.

Gislasson made it 6-1 and Magennis netted again in the 75th minute to conclude the scoring.
