Michael Halliday put in an industrious shift for the Glens |
Glentoran kept their Carnegie Premier League title hopes alive as they claimed a comfortable victory over relegation-threatened Limavady. The Glens are three points behind Linfield with four games left.
Darren Boyce hooked Glentoran's opener on 50 minutes after keeper Glen Millar had failed to gather a deep cross.
Shane McCabe doubled Glentoran's lead on 69 minutes after good work by Michael Halliday while Boyce scored his second goal of the night on 83 minutes.
Glentoran should have been ahead before half-time with Gary Hamilton missing the best chance of the opening period a minute before the break.
Hamilton seemed certain to score when he had only Miller to beat but the Northern Ireland striker's lofted effort went inches wide.
Earlier, Miller had made a fine stop to deny Boyce while Limavady's Gareth Tommins wasted a half-chance when he pulled a shot wide on 35 minutes.
Boyce struck Glentoran's opener five minutes after the break after Miller had failed to collect a deep cross.
Limavady claimed that Boyce had controlled the ball with his arm before lofting the ball home but Alan Black was satisfied with the legality of the goal.
Halliday should have added to Glentoran's lead a minute later but Miller did brilliantly to block the striker's close-range effort.
However, the points were secured when McCabe notched Glentoran's second goal after good work by Halliday in the 69th minute.
Halliday was involved again in the third goal on 83 minutes as his cushioned header was superbly rammed home by Boyce after Colin Nixon's cross.
