Francis Murphy hit two goals in Cliftonville's easy win |
Francis Murphy hit two goals against one of his former clubs to help maintain Cliftonville's title challenge at the Coleraine Showgrounds. Cliftonville dominated from the start and it was little surprise when Murphy headed the Reds ahead on 25 minutes.
Sean Hennegan had a chance to level but John Connolly made the save and the impressive George McMullan then doubled Cliftonville's lead on 44 minutes.
Murphy hit Cliftonville's third from the penalty spot on 56 minutes.
The spot-kick was awarded after Coleraine goalkeeper Lawrence McCormick was left with little option but to haul down the busy Ronan Scannell.
McCormick struggled to deal with crosses but he made a series of fine reaction saves to keep the score down, including a great double-stop to deny Mark Holland.
Paul Gaston was making his 600th appearance for Coleraine but the home side had little to celebrate during the 90 minutes.
Cliftonville dominated from the off with McMullan having an effort cleared off the line and Murphy also going close.
Murphy headed the Reds opener after a McMullan cross while the provider notched Cliftonville's second a minute before the interval after good work by Ronan Scannell.
Murphy's penalty ended any remote chances of a Coleraine revival as Cliftonville stayed two points behind leaders Linfield.
