An own goal gifted Derry the three points in Friday night's Eircom Premier Division game at the Brandywell. City striker Mark Farren shot wide after two minutes of a dull first half.
Derry almost conceded an own goal after 25 minutes when the ball deflected off Barry Molloy's head and Pat Jennings was forced to make a good save.
William Gibson was guilty of the own goal in the 67th minute with his back header going over advancing keeper Barry Ryan and into the visitor's net.
