Derry cruised to a third straight Eircom League Cup final appearance after defeating the students at the Brandywell on Tuesday night. Ciaran Martyn's looping shot gave City a 54th minute lead before UCD's Alan Mahon was red-carded 10 minutes later for head-butting Killian Brennan.
Kevin McHugh made it 2-0 with a header from Sammy Morrow's 67th minute cross.
Pat McCourt scored a superb third on 83 minutes, beating five opponents before firing into the bottom corner.
Derry went closest in the first half when Martyn shot narrowly wide after two minutes.
Morrow had a penalty appeal turned down after he appeared to be pulled back in the box.
The former Hibs midfielder was further frustrated when he poked wide from just two yards 30 seconds after McHugh netted in the second half.
Derry will be out to make it a hat-trick of triumphs in the competition when they take on Bohemians in the decider.
