Ports pair to miss select clash
Central defender John Convery
Central defender John Convery is sidelined with a calf injury
Portadown defenders John Convery and Keith O'Hara are out of Tuesday night's select match between the Irish League and English Conference (1945 GMT).

Convery (calf) and O'Hara (ankle) were both injured in Saturday's dramatic 2-2 Irish Cup draw with Glentoran.

Irish League boss David Jeffrey brings Cliftonville's David McAlinden and Francis Murphy of Distillery into his squad for the Mourneview Park game.

"There's no chance this will be a glorified friendly," said Jeffrey.

"We have one thing on our mind and that is victory and we are confident of giving a good account of ourselves.

"All the players are committed and have bought into this whole enterprise.

"They are a fanatstic, talented bunch who have applied themselves and committed themselves and it has been a privilege and honour to coach this team.

"I haven't gone for the established stars - these are up and coming players and it's a precursor for an U23 international league competition," added Jeffrey.

Plans are being made for the tournament which would include representative teams from Northern Ireland, Wales, England, Italy, Belgium, Holland and the Republic of Ireland.

The competition has been earmarked for October or November 2007.

Jeffrey's 18-man squad includes five players from his own club Linfield and five from Glentoran.
