Ballymena came from two goals down to claim three points at the Showgrounds. Nathan McConnell slotted home from a Gerard McMahon free-kick after four minutes and Gerard McMahon fired in the second from 10 yards out on 19.
Gareth Scates netted with a glancing header on 36 and Darren Murphy turned and found the net from inside the area to equalise after 67 minutes.
Kevin Kelbie headed in from a Murphy cross after 71 and Picking scored with another headed effort on 77 minutes.
After McConnell's opener, the Glenavon striker headed just wide and on the half hour Kelbie's penalty struck the post.
McMahon had to retire injured in the second half and United's Paul Brown headed over.
Brian Mallon was sent off for a challenge on Austin Friel in the final minute.
