Linfield recovered from conceding an early goal to defeat Larne. Lewis Hamlin scored with a low shot past Alan Mannus on 16 minutes as the holders struggled to find their form.
Glenn Ferguson headed over the bar and Chris Keenan denied Chris Kingsberry before Paul McAreavey met an inswinging corner with a header after 65 minutes.
Ferguson sidefooted home after a throw-in on 80 minutes and McAreavey grabbed his second from a Thompson cross after poor Larne defending on 84.
Thompson was wide of the post with another late effort and Keenan saved from a Ferguson header.
