Pitch fears ahead of crunch game
Glentoran boss Roy Coyle

Fears have been expressed over the condition of the Ballymena Showgrounds pitch ahead of Saturday's crucial Irish League game against Glentoran.

The Ballymena Borough Council-owned playing surface was damaged during a recent stock car meeting.

Ballymena United boss Kenny Shiels has been told that the pitch is in "really bad shape" although club secretary Don Stirling has played down the issue.

"The game against Glentoran will proceed," said the Ballymena secretary.

"But I have been in touch with officials of Ballymena Borough Council and I have pointed out that football and stock car racing at the same venue certainly do not mix."

The Showground is also scheduled to host matches in the European Under-19 Championship finals in July.
