 | NATIONWIDE IRISH CUP |
Goals from Michael Halliday and Chris Morgan sent holders Glentoran through to the semi-finals of the Nationwide Irish Cup with a 2-1 win at Coleraine. In a repeat of the last two finals, Halliday netted a 17th minute opener after Morgan had created the opening.
Halliday returned the favour on 71 minutes when he lobbed the ball through for Morgan to go on and beat Davy O'Hare with a left-foot finish.
Kyle McVey headed in his first goal for Coleraine in stoppage-time.
Coleraine then threatened a dramatic equaliser but defender Paul Gaston headed wide from a good position after Stephen Carson's left-wing cross.
Halliday's opener was his 26th goal of the season and it was a simple close-range header after Morgan's ball into the danger area had been blocked by the home defence.
The Glens had further chances with Morgan going closest with a fine near post effort after Kevin Keegan's whipped cross from the right flank.
For Coleraine, Bertie Fulton had a shot strike a post and there were claims the ball had crossed the line before Glentoran cleared the danger.
Morgan's goal seemed to have settled the tie but Kyle McVey then came up to head in a stoppage-time goal for the Bannsiders and they almost snatched a draw when Gaston had that late chance.
