The Ports won the mid-Ulster derby but they were pushed hard by Glenavon in the CIS Cup Group Two clash at Mourneview Park. Vinny Arkins put Portadown ahead with an 11th minute header.
Richard Clarke doubled the lead with a rebound finish after Gary Hamilton's 25-yard shot hit the crossbar.
Glenavon striker Shea Campbell hooked into the net on 43 minutes and the homeside pressed in vain for an equaliser in the second half.
