Cork City 1-0 Derry City
Gavin Dykes' Derry were hammered at home by Bohs on Tuesday |
Derry City are now bottom of the Eircom League after they lost to Cork City on Friday night and UCD defeated Drogheda 2-1 at Belfield.
Kevin Doyle's 78th minute goal meant more heartbreak for Derry boss Gavin Dykes.
His side looked like claiming a badly-needed point against the Intertoto Cup chasing Leesiders but Doyle's goal now piles the pressure on Derry who have only three games left.
Robbie Griffin's late winner at Belfield moved the students ahead of Derry by a point in the league table although UCD have played a game more.
Goalscorer Doyle had the first chance of the match in the seventh minute but he hooked his shot over Alan Gough's crossbar.
Derry's only goal attempt of note in the first half was a Ciaran Martyn shot in the 22nd minute which was comfortably gathered by Cork goalkeeper Michael Devine.
On the half-hour, Gough fumbled a shot from Conor O'Grady but the former Glentoran goalkeeper gathered at the second attempt.
Four minutes after the break, Gough made a fine save to stop a George O'Callaghan shot.
Doyle's winner came 12 minutes from time with him heading Noel Horgan's cross to the net.
Even after that, Derry twice went close to rescuing a point.
In the 85th minute, Gareth McGlynn shot inches over the bar after a Mark Farren cross.
Then in injury-time, much to Gavin Dykes' frustration, Ciaran Martyn fired wide when he had only Devine to beat.
