Derry City's Ciaran Martyn almost found the target |
Derry City's woes continued when they slumped to a 2-0 defeat away to basement side UCD on Friday night. The Candystripes are now only three points ahead of UCD and remain in the relegation play-off place, a point behind Drogheda.
Derry made a disastrous start in Dublin, going a goal down after only two minutes.
UCD defender Tony McDonnell was pushed in the back by Derry's Kevin Deery and Robert McAuley converted the resulting penalty.
Derry struggled after that and it was no surprise when they went 2-0 down after 20 minutes when some poor defending allowed Robbie Martin shoot low into the net.
The visitors came more into the game in the second half and Eamonn Doherty sent through an accurate through ball which was picked up by Ciaran Martyn.
But against his former team, Martyn saw his effort hit the post and that was as close as Derry came.
Meanwhile, Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper Barry Ryan has been suspended for 15 months for a doping offence after testing positive for a banned substance.
