Gary Beckett was on target for Derry |
Derry City are just a point behind fellow Eircom League relegation strugglers Drogheda after a 1-1 draw against St Patrick's Athletic at the Brandywell. The Candystripes were the better side against the Dubliners but after going behind they had to rely on a second-half Gary Beckett strike to secure a share of the spoils.
It was a mistake by Sean Hargan which gifted the visitors the opener after 27 minutes.
The defender slipped, allowing ex-Newry Town striker Gary McPhee to shoot low into the bottom corner of the net.
But Derry got their reward on 58 minutes after Eddie McCallion's cross from the right was met powerfully by Beckett who made no mistake from six yards.
Derry could have snatched it in the 77th minute when defender Paddy McLaughlin sent a 25-yard rasping shot over the bar but they had to be happy with just a point.
Gavin Dykes' side are now a single point behind Drogheda with six games left as they bid to avoid the relegation play-off place and must now win against bottom side UCD on Friday night.
