Gavin Dykes is hoping to keep Derry City in the Premier Division |
A second-half penalty by Andy Myler helped secure a share of the spoils for Drogheda against Derry City in Saturday's Eircom League clash at O2 Park. The result means Derry remain two points behind Drogheda as both sides bid to avoid the relegation play-off spot.
In atrocious conditions, Gavin Dykes' side looked the most likely to score early on with Gary Beckett causing problems in front of the Drogheda goal.
And it was no surprise when Derry took the lead after 24 minutes through Sean Friars.
The former Northern Ireland under 21 captain made a darting run into the penalty area to slam home his first goal of the season from 10 yards after good work by Beckett and Michael Holt.
Drogheda came more and more into the game in the final 10 minutes of the half, with midfielder Declan O'Brien troubling the Derry defence.
Striker Andy Myler then had a shot cleared off the line five minutes before the break by Eddie McCallion.
Derry began the second half on the back foot with Drogheda's Stephen Gray seeing his header come back off Alan Gough's post on 49 minutes.
But the County Louth side got themselves back into it on 68 minutes when O'Brien made his way into the Derry area where he was fouled by Gough.
Myler stepped up to direct home his 13th goal of the season - his second penalty success of the week, having scored against St Patrick's Athletic on Wednesday.
