Grant fired home in a goalmouth scramble on 87 minutes after a mix-up in the home defence to earn the visitors a point.
Mark Farren wasted two good chances for Derry in the first half, shooting straight at Tony O'Dowd on 22 minutes and knocking the ball wide after 37 minutes.
At the other end Trevor Molloy saw his shot well saved by Alan Gough and had another goalbound effort cleared off the line by Billy Clery.
With half-time approaching Farren's header was clawed to safety by O'Dowd and Molloy scooped the ball wide.
Gareth McGlynn put Derry ahead after 57 minutes, shooting home after collecting a Gary Beckett pass.
Beckett squandered a gilt-edged opportunity to extend City's lead ten minutes later but shot wide of the post when clean through on goal.
