League delay Smyth verdict
Glentoran's Gary Smyth is at the centre of a registration inquiry
Gary Smyth was voted player of the year for 2002-03

The Irish League's verdict on the Gary Smyth registration controversy is not now expected until Friday evening.

A meeting of the Irish League's rules revision committee will discuss the matter on Thursday but its findings will not be confirmed until the Irish League management committee issues its rubberstamp on Friday.

The Smyth saga will be the only item on the agenda at Friday's management meeting.

Irish League player of the year Smyth is at the centre of a registration inquiry which could result in Glentoran losing the five points they have won this season.

Tuesday's CIS League Cup semi-final between Glentoran and Larne was postponed while the Irish League investigate the issue.

Glentoran could be thrown out of the cup competition and also may face a heavy fine if they are found guilty of the alleged transgression.

It has emerged that the Irish Football Association have not had a copy of Smyth's registration forms since the start of the 2002-03 term.

Glentoran face losing their points, being kicked out of the CIS Cup and a fine.

The Irish Football Association met to discuss the issue on Tuesday.

The association released a statement which said Smyth had not been registered in accordance with the rules.

"The Association, after legal advice, informed both the Irish Football League and Glentoran FC of the irregularities regarding the registration of this player.

"On legal advice, the Association will make no further comment on the matter at this time".

Glentoran were involved in a similar inquiry last season over midfielder Anderw Kilmartin.

The east Belfast club were docked 12 points and eliminated from the CIS Cup.

However, Glentoran later got the points back and were reinstated in the CIS Cup which they went on to win.
