Reds earn shoot-out win

Cliftonville 1-1 Crusaders (aet - Cliftonville win 4-1 on pens)

Cliftonville earned a place in the CIS Cup Final thanks to a penalty shoot-out win over north Belfast neighbours Crusaders at the Oval on Wednesday evening.

James Willis' first half goal for Crusaders was cancelled out by James Quigley's equaliser six minutes into the second period and both sides missed good chances to seal the outcome in normal time.

Chances were few and far between during extra-time with both teams seemingly content to try their luck in the shoot-out.

However, Cliftonville's penalty-taking proved far superior with Liam Fleming, Stephen Small, James Quigley and Keith Mulvenna all successful.

Only Gavin Arthur hit the target from Crusaders' three attempts with both Johnny Shaw and James Willis failing from the spot.

The opening half hour of the contest was largely dull with Brian Russell coming closest to breaking the deadlock with a 26th minute volley which just missed the target.

However, Willis fired Crusaders ahead in the 33rd minute with a dipping right foot shot which beat goalkeeper Paul Stranney.

Right on half-time, Willis should have added a second goal for Crusaders after a mix-up in the Cliftonville defence but Stranney kept his team in the game with a superb pointblank save.

Cliftonville drew level six minutes after the interval with James Quigley supplying the finishing touch after a Conor Hagan free-kick had skidded through the Crusaders defence.

Stranney came to Cliftonville's on two occasion in the final 12 minutes with his second stop to deny Stevie Livingstone absolutely outstanding.

At the other end of the field, Anto Crawford missed an absolute sitter with six minutes left after a mix-up between Davy Magowan and goalkeeper Michael Dougherty.
