Glentoran's Michael O'Neill wants to return to Scotland

Former Northern Ireland midfielder Michael O'Neill is leaving Glentoran.

Glens boss Roy Coyle confirmed that O'Neill is keen to return to Scotland where he still lives.

He joined the Oval side from Clydebank at the start of last season, and travelled over to the province for games.

O'Neill was a big influence in Glentoran's winning start to the season which saw them scoop three of the four trophies on offer.

"Michael came to me and we talked about his future," said Coyle.

"He asked me if he could leave if he found a club in Scotland and I was happy to agree to his request.

"He has been a fabulous player for us since arriving at the start of last season. In the first part of the league campaign he was outstanding and helped set us up for the success we achieved.

"I would stress, however, if Michael does not find a club he will be staying with us and I'll be happy enough about that."

O'Neill's keenness to find regular first-team action could also see other Irish League clubs become interested.

Glentoran started the defence of their CIS League Cup on Saturday with an explosive 8-0 victory over Dungannon Swifts.

Tuesday night sees the CIS competition continue with Portadown hosting Ballymena United and Coleraine at home to Limavady United. Both games start at 1945BST.
