Tommy McCallion (centre) had a superb debut for the Glens |
League champions and holders Glentoran handed out an 8-0 hammering to promoted Dungannon Swifts in Saturday's opening round of CIS Cup group games.
Dungannon gave Roy Coyle's side far too much room and with new signing Tommy McCallion linking up superbly with Andy Smith, the Glens responded with a goals feast.
Northern Ireland international Andy Smith put the Glens ahead with a 16th minute header and a further nodded effort from Mark Glendinning on the half-hour increased the home side's advantage.
Darren Lockhart's 38th minute deflected shot left Glentoran 3-0 ahead and seconds after the break, Kevin Keegan made it four.
McCallion turned superbly to slam home the fifth goal from outside the box in the 51st minute and the former Derry City player then turned provider on two occasions to help Smith complete his hat-trick.
Keegan completed the rout with a powerful headed effort three minutes from time.
Omagh Town 1-2 Cliftonville
Conor Hagan's superb 25-yard effort three minutes from time earned Cliftonville a deserved win in the other Section A game at St Julian's Road.
The first half was poor but the game improved in the second period with Andy Crawford's 30-yard shot in the 51st minute beating Omagh goalkeeper Peter Ward.
Ivan Sproule levelled for the home side in the 66th minute after a goalmouth scramble but Hagan's superb late strike won the day for Cliftonville.
Institute 0-2 Glenavon
First half goals from Sean Collins (22) and Dean Smith (39) earned Glenavon the points against Institute.
Former Northern Ireland under-21 international Aidan McVeigh set up both goals.
Institute fought back in the second half but a Willie Patterson effort which clipped the woodwork was the nearest the Derry side came to replying.
Ards 1-0 Crusaders
Darren Fitzgerald's 29th minute goal was enough to earn Ards a 1-0 win over Crusaders.
Fitzgerald, a summer signing from Glentoran, linked up well with David Rainey and Peter Lowry and could have added further goals for the North Down club.
Lee Feeney also showed that he should be a useful addition to the Ards squad with some decent work on the right side of midfield.
Andy McKnight squandered a chance to level for Crusaders four minutes from time but right at the death, Feeney clipped the Crues woodwork.
Linfield 5-2 Larne
Paul Dalglish scored two penalties on his Linfield debut as the Blues ran out 5-2 winners against Larne.
Glenn Ferguson opened the scoring for the home team in the fifth minute and Dalgish then converted 11th and 16th minute penalties to put Linfield firmly in control.
Two goals from recent signing Derek Delaney which came either side of a Winkie Murphy header left Larne only 4-2 in arrears at the interval.
However, Ferguson restored Linfield's three goal cushion with a further strike two minutes after the interval.
Dalglish faded from the contest in the second period and was substituted in the 64th minute.
Kenny Irons also debuted for Linfield but he made little impression during the game.
Lisburn Distillery 2-1 Newry Town
Distillery produced a late show to claim the three points in the clash at Ballyskeagh.
Newry, spurred by some tremendous goalkeeping from Stuart Addis, seemed set to claim a fortunate win when they remained 1-0 up with only four minutes of normal time left.
However fine work by Francis Murphy then turned the game in Lisburn Distillery's favour.
Firstly Murphy set up his former Cliftonville team-mate Conor Downey to level in the 86th minute which cancelled out Robert Casey's 60th minute penalty for Newry.
Then in injury-time, Murphy was felled in the penalty area and another ex-Cliftonville man Gerard Lyttle held his nerve to slot home the spot-kick.
Newry's penalty had been a controversial affair with referee Davy Best adjudging that Wayne Buchanan had fouled Brian McCrystal.
