Derry City 2-0 Shelbourne Ciaran Martyn grabbed the second goal for Candystripes |
Derry City shocked unbeaten Eircom League leaders Shelbourne with a deserved victory at the Brandywell on Thursday evening.
a cracking 57th minute strike by Gareth McGlynn and another by Ciaran Martyn two minutes later gave the Candystripes a deserved victory.
The Dubliners looked the business in the first half with their physical presence and paced giving Derry a plethora of problems.
However, Derry shrugged aside their lethargy in the opening period and took the game by the scruff of the neck after the break.
Derry goalkeeper Davy Forde, however, was the busier of the goalkeepers in that first half.
He had to look busy to prevent Shells striker Jason Byrne finding the target on three occasions.
However, Derry also had a chance in the 36th minute when a Sean Hargan piledriver took a deflection only for Shels keeper Steve Williams to make a great stop.
Disjointed
Bryne, however, brought gasps from the crowd when a rasping shot was finger-tipped on to the crossbar by Forde just before the break .
Shels, undefeated from 10 outings this season, were shocked by the Derry onslaught on the resumption.
First the excellent Gary Beckett worked himself into space to test Williams. Then came that opening goal when McGlynn took advantage of disjointed Shels defence to rifle home a shot past Williams.
The crowd had hardly settled when Derry went two up when Beckett found Martyn who steered the ball wide of Williams.
Victory sees the Candystripes leapfrog over Athlone Town and Drogheda into joint fifth place from second bottom.
