Derry City 4-1 Waterford
Kevin Mahon's side has jumped into seventh place |
Derry City got back to winning ways with a handsome victory over high-flying Waterford at the Brandywell on Thursday evening.
Kevin Deery got the opening goal for Kevin Mahon's side with Willie Byrne striking a late first-half equaliser for the visitors.
Ciaran Martyn, Gary Beckett and Gerard Gill found the target in the second half for the Candystripes who now jump into seventh place in the Eircom Premiership League.
Derry were on top in the first half and took the lead in the 22nd minute when defender Deery found himself in the box and saw his deflected shot squeeze in at the post.
Two minutes later Padraig Moran almost doubled Derry's total, but he saw his shot saved by Dan Connor.
Waterford, however, scored against the run of play with poor marking allowing central defender Byrne to find space to score.
Derry continued their dominance on the resumption and after good approach work by Garth McGlynn, Martyn tucked the ball away past Connor.
It was all one-way traffic for Mahon's inspired side and Beckett rifled in goal number three with a perfect strike in the 71st minute.
Derry's evening was complete with a fourth goal by substitute Gerard Gill who knocked in his first goal for the Candystripes fourminutes from the end
