The Northern Ireland boss said he understood why many club managers were firmly against international friendlies at such a crucial stage of the season. But, speaking in Belfast ahead of Wednesday's meeting with Finland, McIlroy said friendly matches formed a vital part of his preparations for competitive fixtures. "To prepare for important games you have got to do something. If you have get-togethers instead of friendlies are they going to be beneficial? 'Managers complaining' "I understand the situation managers are in, especially at this stage of the season with promotion and relegation issues as well as cup games. "I don't understand how you are going to resolve this situation but it has to be resolved. "I have been to conferences where this has been brought up and the managers have been complaining. "Okay, but what is an international manager supposed to do. When are we supposed to have a game?" McIlroy's squad linked up on Monday with Crewe's uncapped Steve Jones added to the pool after Kevin Horlock's absence with a swollen knee. Horlock was the fourth player to withdraw from the party with Colin Murdock, Gerry Taggart and Phil Mulryne already sidelined. | See also: 13 Feb 03 | Northern Ireland 10 Feb 03 | Republic of Ireland 04 Feb 03 | N Ireland Top Northern Ireland stories now: Links to more Northern Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
