David Vaughan slides in for his first Wales goal in his 16th game
First international goals for David Vaughan and Aaron Ramsey saw Wales end a poor World Cup campaign on a high and eased pressure on boss John Toshack.
Gareth Bale tormented group four bottom side Liechtenstein with a man-of-the-match display and his run and cross set up Vaughan who slid in for the first.
A shaky Wales defensive display gave a number of chances to David Hasler.
But Bale won a free kick on the edge of the box and Ramsey stepped forward to fire in a curling, right-footed strike.
A hardy band of 400 Wales fans were watching in the tiny alpine state, despite Wales' dismal record of six losses in 10 qualifying games that had seen veteran manager Toshack come in for severe criticism.
They saw Wales - already certain of a fourth-placed finish in the group - start brightly at Vaduz's Rheinepark Stadium, Bale electrifying in attack down the left-hand side.
His third-minute cross should have given Wales the lead, but Jermaine Easter - a surprise choice up front ahead of Sam Vokes in a 4-4-2 formation - missed a great opportunity from close range.
Liechtenstein - who were earlier doomed to a certain bottom-place finish in the group when Azerbaijan drew 1-1 with Russia - showed they had teeth, though, Hasler easily turning new Wales captain James Collins and forcing Boaz Myhill into a save.
Another Bale run down the left led to the first goal, a sharp ball behind the defence just avoiding Simon Church, but Vaughan sliding in near the back post to fire home his first international goal in 16 games.
Lucas Berle shot over the bar for the home side before Easter, playing his first international since March 2008, was put through by a fantastic Ramsey ball.
A delightful first touch by the speedy MK Dons striker put him one-on-one with the keeper.
But Peter Jehle stood up well to the test and saved the front man's effort with his legs.
Converted defender Ashley Williams helped marshal Wales' injury-depleted midfield, allowing Bale more attacking space, but David Edwards was unable to convert the full-back's whipped cross.
Liechtenstein nearly made Wales pay on the stroke of half-time, exposing a shaky Wales back four where Collins again showed a worrying tendency to over-commit.
Ronny Buchel easily split a static defensive line and left Hasler a clear run at Myhill, the forward firing past the keeper but wide of the posts.
Buchel was booked two minutes into the second half after a bizarre attempt to deceive Wales and referee Kaldma Sten at a twice-taken corner.
Wales needed Ramsey's strike 10 minutes from time to seal the win
Easter finally got the ball in the net after a by-now trademark run and cross from Bale, but the short-range effort cannoned in off his hand and was disallowed.
Collins had a header from a corner cleared off the line, before Ramsey finally gave Wales a two-goal margin 10 minutes from time.
Bale predictably set up the position, the Spurs star hacked down on the edge of the box by Yves Oehri.
Arsenal teenager Ramsey whipped in a free kick that breezed the hairline of the wall and curled into the top left corner.
A Church header went narrowly wide, before an injury-time effort from home hero Mario Frick went straight into Myhill's arms.
Another superb Ramsey through ball put Easter one-on-one with the keeper, but the unfortunate striker missed the chance to crown the win when he fired straight at Jehle.
