Gordon aiming for Scotland start

Craig Gordon thinks Scotland manager George Burley has a major decision to make over who will play in goal for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Gordon has lost his starting place at Sunderland but told BBC Scotland he is fully fit and aims to be chosen ahead of Rangers keeper Allan McGregor.

"I'm the one that wants to play in the next game, so I have to look after myself," said Gordon.

"It's a big call for George, but that's what he gets paid for."

With 35 caps, experience is on Gordon's side but the 26-year-old faces competition from McGregor for the double-header against the Netherlands and Iceland.

The former Hearts custodian had his season interrupted by an ankle injury and since recovering has not been able to dislodge Martin Fulop at the Stadium of Light, making just one appearance this year.

McGregor was dropped for a short spell in September by Rangers manager Walter Smith but has held on to first team place ever since and Gordon is an admirer of his rival.

"I know that Allan is a quality goalkeeper, I've trained with him long enough now, and we both came through the youth ranks of Edinburgh schools together," said Gordon.

"But I hope the manager will look at it favourably and from my point of view, as I have the most international experience, but it's certainly going to be a tough call for him.

"I've enjoyed playing for my country as often as I have, and it's something I don't want to give up in a hurry, and I want to do the best job I can throughout the rest of my career.

"Hopefully, I'll get the nod and do what I'm good at and get out there and play."

Gordon also believes that Scotland can take hope from the victory over France in Paris 18 months ago and that the players are more than capable of achieving a result in Amsterdam.

"There's no questions over my fitness - I'm ready to go," said Gordon, who last played in an FA Cup defeat to Blackburn on 4 February.

"The games everyone wants to play in are against some of the best players in Europe, and there's no better team on their day than Holland - they play some great stuff and it would be a good test for everyone.

"So, I'm hopefully that I get the opportunity to test myself against them."
