Walter Smith has thrown his support behind Alex McLeish, the man set to succeed him as Scotland manager at a Scottish FA news conference on Monday. "I'm sure he'll do very well," the former national boss told BBC Sport at Ibrox on Saturday.
"Alex knows that I wish him the best of luck and I hope that Eck can do an exceptionally good job.
"He'll have a very difficult section to try to qualify from as everybody knows and I hope he succeeds in doing it."
Smith steered Scotland to the top of their European Championship qualifying group, but World Cup finalists Italy and France remain favourites to go through.
The former Everton boss quit Scotland on 10 January to embark on a second spell in charge of Rangers.
And the SFA announced on Thursday that Smith's successor would be revealed at Hampden on Monday at 1100GMT.
Although an appointment has obviously been made, it has refused to confirm that McLeish is its choice.
But Smith's comments come as confirmation that the man who quit Rangers in the summer will be in charge for the remaining European Championship qualifiers and beyond.
