Tommy Burns had been a favourite to be Scotland manager

Burns was disappointed not to be contacted by the SFA after Walter Smith quit as manager to join Rangers.

"If it was me, I would have liked a phone call," said Dalglish.

"I don't think the onus was on Tommy to phone them and find out what was happening. The onus was on the SFA to contact Tommy."

The Scottish FA appears to have chosen former Rangers manager Alex McLeish ahead of Burns as the new national manager.

And Burns had decided he will not be assistant third time around and will concentrate on his job with Celtic.

"If that's what Tommy wants to do then that's fine and you've got to admire his honesty," said Dalglish, who thought that the SFA could have kept Celtic's chief executive informed.

"The SFA could have phoned Peter Lawwell and asked for permission to speak to Tommy, whether he was going to get the job or not.

"It was only common courtesy because Tommy has been there a fair amount of time and has done a decent job.

"And I think Tommy would have appreciated that.

"It might mean now that whoever comes in will bring their own fresh team in."

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan believes Scotland's loss is the Scottish champions' gain.

"If Tommy had become the Scotland manager, we would have had to sign another four people to take his place," he said.

"So it saved Peter Lawwell a lot of money, that's for sure.

"I reiterate what I said away back when I first came to Celtic; one of the best decisions I've ever made in 10 years of management was asking Tommy to come on board with me and be close to me."

Meanwhile, Scotland defender David Weir lamented Burns' departure.

"I'm disappointed he's left," said the Rangers defender.

"He was a big part of the set-up and he was a big part of the success. He was well liked by everyone.

"He was an important member of the team and him leaving, allied with the manager and Ally McCoist leaving as well, is a big gap to fill.
