Scots aim to avenge Paris mauling
EURO 2008 QUALIFIER
Scotland's assistant manager Tommy Burns
Group B: Scotland v France
Date: 7 October
Kick-off: 1700 BST
Venue: Hampden Park, Glasgow
Coverage: Live on BBC Sportsound, updates on the BBC Sport website
Scotland assistant manager Tommy Burns is confident of a better performance against France than when the sides last met during his first game in the role.

Bertie Vogts' side were hammered 5-0 when Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet tore Scotland's defence to shreds in Paris four years ago.

But Burns said the side under Walter Smith were a different proposition.

"We've developed under Walter," he said. "Who's to say a Scotland bursting with passion can't get something?"

Since taking over from Vogts, Smith's Scotland side have lost three of their 14 games and currently sit top of Group B in the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

Burns said the side had been transformed since Smith's appointment and that they were better equipped to face a formidable France than they were four years ago.

There is no fear in the body language at all

"My memory that night is of watching a team from another planet," Burns said.

"Not just in the way they could handle the ball but how big, strong and fast they were, guys from top international clubs.

"But I don't feel the same now as I did that night - not at all. Four years down the road and you see the group of players we have and we've developed under Walter."

Burns said Scotland had recognised what their strengths were and concentrated on utilising them.

"But we need to keep pushing to try and get a bit better," he added.

"We're in a situation where there is quite a considerable leap to go to compete with this team.

"But it's there for them to do it. It's certainly nothing we fear. There is no fear in the body language at all."
