James McFadden was injured playing for Scotland |
James McFadden and Lee McCulloch have been included in the Scotland squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers with France and Ukraine despite injury lay-offs. Everton's McFadden and Wigan Athletic's McCulloch hope to prove their fitness with their clubs at the weekend.
Barry Ferguson is in the 25-strong squad after returning to Rangers' midfield following injury.
There are also places for Hibernian's Scott Brown, Cardiff's Kevin McNaughton and Norwich City's Paul Gallacher.
Everton defender Gary Naysmith misses out through injury.
Kenny Miller is suspended for the France game on 7 October but is included in the squad as he will be available for the game in Kiev four days later.
 | Losing Kenny was a blow because he has been terrific for us Scotland manager Walter Smith |
Scotland boss Walter Smith rued the loss of the Celtic striker, who was cautioned in each qualifier earlier this month.
But he has only named three other strikers, despite McFadden's injury problems.
And the versatile McCulloch is also included despite not playing for Wigan since 26 August due to a knee injury.
Smith said: "Losing Kenny was a blow because he has been terrific for us.
"Lee McCulloch and James McFadden have not played since the previous international games, but both hope to be involved with their clubs over the weekend.
"Once they come along, we will see how they got over the weekend games - if they are involved - and try to determine their overall match fitness."
Smith has mainly stuck by the squad that has gained maximum points from their opening two matches in Group B.
 | The captaincy will revert to Barry (Ferguson) if he feels he is right to play |
National captain Ferguson missed the games against Faroe Islands and Lithuana with a heel injury.
And Smith added: "The captaincy will revert to Barry if he feels he is right to play and we feel it is the right time to play him.
"Because of his circumstances and the game being of this magnitude, I will take into account what he says about his match fitness.
"Barry is the captain and, if he isn't available to us, which he hasn't been for the last few internationals then it's always a bit of a blow.
"It's an area of the pitch where we have some good quality and he certainly adds to that."
McFadden had been a doubt for the forthcoming matches after picking up a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win away to Lithuania.
Brown was called into the squad for that game as injury cover and keeps his place.
McNaughton, who won the last of his three caps two years ago, has been rewarded for his form with Championship leaders Cardiff.
Gallacher has established himself in Norwich's Championship starting line-up.
And he replaces Motherwell goalkeeper Graeme Smith as third choice behind Craig Gordon and Neil Alexander.
