Scotland call for keeper Combe

Scotland caretaker manager Tommy Burns has called up Kilmarnock's Alan Combe for his first game in charge, against Sweden on 17 November.

And there is also a recall for Aberdeen defender Kevin McNaughton for the friendly at Easter Road.

The 30-year-old Combe will be experienced back-up to Hearts' Craig Gordon and Celtic's David Marshall.

Combe, formerly of St Mirren and Dundee United, has impressed since moving to Kilmarnock from Bradford City.

But Burns will give Marshall a start against Sweden ahead of Combe and Gordon, who has played in Scotland's opening three World Cup qualifiers, to give the 19-year-old more international experience.

"Craig Gordon is the preferred choice at number one, but David Marshall is running him close," said Burns.

"The two are the best two goalkeepers we have."

Burns' squad had already been disrupted by injury, Wigan Athletic forward Lee McCulloch not being available due to damaged ankle ligaments and Southampton's Neil McCann having a broken toe.

The selection by 47-year-old Burns, who took over after the resignation of Berti Vogts, was under particular scrutiny as he has stated that he could be interested in taking over from the German permanently.

Burns, who was manager of Celtic, Kilmarnock and Reading, has already stressed that he did not always agree with Vogts' decisions during his time as assistant.

He criticised the German for giving international caps too readily and an anticipated call-up for Rangers' versatile Bob Malcolm failed to materialise in his first 22-man selection.

There was also no place for Robbie Winters, despite the former Aberdeen and Dundee United striker rounding off a superb season with Brann Bergen by scoring in a 4-1 Norwegian Cup final victory over Lyn at the weekend.

Instead, Aberdeen's good start to the season led to a return to the international scene for McNaughton, who won the second of his two caps against Denmark in 2003.

It appears that the 22-year-old, heavily criticised by Vogts for being "too nervous" at international level, has been promised a start against the Swedes.

"He is back to his best and was outstanding against Celtic," said Burns.

"I spoke to Jimmy Calderwood and he said that was how he had been playing all season."

Sweden coach Lars Lagerback announced his squad on Tuesday and it was minus former Celtic striker Henrik Larsson, who has been allowed to concentrate on club football with Barcelona.
