| Saturday, 7 September, 2002, 17:52 GMT 18:52 UK Clockwatch: Euro 2004 qualifiers ![]() All the action from the opening round of Euro 2004 qualifying games involving Scotland, Wales and Republic of Ireland. Faroe Islands 2-2 Scotland 1851: Mark Hughes' men comfortably play out the remaining minutes - and almost claim a third through Davies - to record a superb 2-0 victory. 1846:Wales are in complete control in Helsinki, happy to soak up Finland's lacklustre attacks before springing into attack themselves through Bellamy, Davies and Giggs. With only four minutes of injury time to play, Wales look set for a famous win. 1835:Wales experience a few wobbles at the back. First, Litmanen's free-kick is missed by everyone and rebounds off the inside of the post. Then the Finns force two corners in quick succession as the visitors struggle to clear their lines. But with Craig Bellamy now on for Andy Johnson, the Welsh carry a greater threat on the break. 1830:Finland 0-2 Wales - Spurs winger Simon Davies continues his rich vein of form by providing a cool finish to Giggs' well-timed pass. 1828: Litmanen goes close once more, before Jones makes a great save to deny Sheffield Wednesday striker Shefki Kuqi. Moments later, the Finns throw on an extra striker by replacing full-back Ville Nylundin with Charlton's Jonaton Johansson. 1820:Wales almost make it 2-0 when Hartson's header from a Giggs corner drifts just wide of the far post. 1816: Finland look a little more threatening after the restart, with Litmanen pulling the strings, but the Welsh defence is resisting the home side's pressure with some aplomb. 1802: The referee ends proceedings in Moscow, leaving Mick McCarthy's Ireland to rue a poor start that saw them concede two early goals and lose Duff to injury. In Helsinki, an unchanged Wales side get the second half started. 1753:Russia 4-2 Ireland - a disaster for the Irish and a disaster for Phil Babb. Only just on as a late substitute, Babb scores a luckless own goal when Given's parry of Kerzhakov's shot bounces off his body and into the net. 1747: It's half-time in Helsinki, but the home side are getting closer. Finland captain Jari Litmanen forces a good save from Jones with a well-struck free-kick. Ireland still have 10 minutes to score, but the Russians are not letting them have a touch of the ball. 1741:Russia 3-2 Ireland - the visitors are right back in it. Clinton Morrison finishes sharply after good work from Mark Kinsella and Steve Finnan. Meanwhile in Helsinki, Wales continue to frustrate the Finns. 1736:Russia 3-1 Ireland - no sooner do Ireland gain a toehold in the game, than Russia storm down the field to restore their two-goal lead. Second-half substitute Alexander Kerzhakov stoops low to re-direct a cross from the left past Given. 1735:Russia 2-1 Ireland - second-half substitute Gary Doherty heads home from an Ian Harte corner. 1730:Finland 0-1 Wales - John Hartson prods the ball under Antti Niemi to give Mark Hughes' men a dream start in Helsinki. It's strictly route-one stuff for the Welsh. Paul Jones' huge goal kick is helped on by first Davies and then Giggs. Celtic striker Hartson does the rest. 1720: With Russia seemingly content on maintaining the 2-0 status quo, Ireland push hard for the breakthrough. Keane is bundled over in the box, but the referee waves play on. Wales and Finland, however, are yet to create anything of note in a scrappy opening 20 minutes. 1712: Russia get the second half started in Moscow with Ireland desperately needing a quick goal to get back into the game. Over in Helsinki, Wales' packed midfield is proving difficult to bypass for Finland. But lone frontman John Hartson is being forced to survive on scraps. Hughes will be hoping for more from Giggs and Davies. 1700: The game kicks off in Helsinki, with Wales forcing an early corner. 1655:Ireland reach half-time still two goals down, but perhaps heartened by an improved showing after the second Russian goal. The visitors had more of the ball in the first half, and forced six corners to Russia's one. But the home side had the cutting edge, and in Beschastnykh they have the game's most dangerous forward. 1645: The referee ends 90 minutes of purgatory for Scotland, and they should consider themselves fortunate it wasn't worse. A 2-2 draw is more than they deserved. 1640: Having hauled themselves back from the brink, Scotland nearly throw it away again. The Faroe Islanders miss two great chances in two minutes to claim a famous win. 1637:Faroe Islands 2-2 Scotland - just when it was looking beyond them, Rangers midfielder Ferguson latches on to a hopeful through-ball to equalise for Scotland. 1635:Russia 2-0 Ireland - having already gone close once, Beschastnykh slams a right-footed shot into the roof of Given's goal to put Ireland in real trouble. 1633: With Scotland now just 10 minutes away from their worst result ever, the Faroe Islands take off their two-goal hero Petersen and replace him with Flotum. The substitute blazes his first touch wide of the Scottish goal - another undeserved let-off for the Scots. 1629:Russia 1-0 Ireland - Andrei Karyaka steps inside a statuesque Gary Breen and rifles a low right-footed shot underneath Given's dive. 1627: A blow to Ireland's chances of victory in Moscow. Duff, who was looking lively, is forced to go off with an injury. Clinton Morrison replaces him. 1619: Two more chances go begging for Scotland, but the visitors are now at least looking more like their pre-game billing as favourites. Second-half substitute Crawford is at the centre of Scotland's revival, while Lambert and Barry Ferguson are starting to gain control of midfield. 1616:Faroe Islands 2-1 Scotland - Paul Lambert's shot ricochets into the net to give the Scots a barely deserved lifeline. The home side, however, almost regain their two-goal cushion a minute later when Douglas is forced to save Borg's low shot. 1614:Ireland continue to look a little sluggish, and are fortunate not to go a goal down when Vladimir Beschastnykh's lob goes just wide of Shay Given's far post. 1610:Ireland kick off in Moscow. The Russians force a corner and nearly score after a scramble in the Irish penalty area. 1608: After Scotland waste two more half-chances to drag themselves back into the tie, the Faroe Islanders pass up a golden opportunity to completely kill the game off. A terrible bobble is probably the only thing that keeps Petersen from side-footing into an open goal and claiming a remarkable hat-trick. 1600: While the Irish wait to get things started at Moscow's impressive Lokomotiv Stadium, the Scots pray for better things in the second half at the rather more basic Toftir Stadium. Not being allowed to make the 11 substitutions that his side's showing warranted, Vogts settles for just one change at the break - Stephen Crawford replacing Paul Dickov. 1545: The Polish referee brings an end to perhaps the most embarrassing 45 minutes in Scotland's footballing history. 1541: The Scots finally create some genuine goal-scoring chances. Sadly, both are spurned. The first when Middlesbrough winger Allan Johnston volleys into the side netting from five yards out. The second when Christian Dailly fails to convert a one-on-one with Faroe Islands keeper Jens Knudsen. 1535: While Scotland are unable to string three passes together, the home side are continuing to look dangerous. With two-goal hero Petersen dropping deep to link play, the Faroe Islanders look the more likely scorers. 1525: Stunned by their hosts' two-goal burst, Scotland struggle to find any rhythm. On the evidence of the game's first 25 minutes there is only one footballing minnow on display, and it's not the Faroe Islands. 1512:Faroe Islands 2-0 Scotland - it's that man Petersen again. Another cross from the right, another well-placed finish past Douglas. Having shown his heading ability six minutes before, Petersen displayed his volleying technique this time. Vogts' attack-minded selection is starting to look a little rash. Are the Faroe Islands set to join Iran, Peru and Costa Rica in Scotland's book of football fiascos? 1506:Faroe Islands 1-0 Scotland - the home side score with their first attack. John Petersen, given the freedom of Scotland's penalty area, gets his head to an optimistic cross from the right. 1500: The Faroe Islanders kick off and immediately lump the ball downfield. |
