Law blames defence for Cup exit

Nicky Law
We aren't losing games, we are gifting games away

Nicky Law

Alfreton Town boss Nicky Law pointed the finger of blame at his defence after seeing them go out of the FA Cup.

The Reds lost their third qualifying round replay 2-1 away at Southport.

Southport led at the break and although Anthony Howell's cool penalty levelled the scores, the home side won it thanks to a controversial late penalty.

"There is a lack of experience which is killing us at the moment. Some people aren't listening to what we are telling them and it has to stop," Law said.

"We gave two poor goals away [on Saturday] and on Tuesday they played very well, but we again conceded two poor goals.

"We gave two poor goals away at Blyth in the league, two at home against Southport last Saturday when we really should have won, and two again in the replay.

"At some stage the penny has to drop with a few of them and stop doing some of the things they have been doing.

"We aren't losing games, we are gifting games away. We have got a good, young squad of players that can do well this year. But they are going to make it a damn sight harder if they keep doing what they are doing.

"I am now going to have to get some people out on loan to free up funds to bring players in who will make the difference."
