Johansson has been in European football's top job since 1990

Johansson's decision to run marks a change of mind after he initially said he would not stand again.

The 76-year-old Swede has been president since 1990, and his only declared opponent to date is former France captain Michel Platini.

Johansson said: "I've been honoured by those who have said they want continuity and stable leadership and feel I can provide that."

Johansson, who has suffered from prostate cancer, said in January: "The time has come to stop and let someone else replace me. The time has come for me to go fishing."

But he has bowed to a persuasion campaign, believed to be led by former Germany captain and coach Franz Beckenbauer, who said he would only stand for election if Johansson quit.

Johansson added: "We have discussed what we have achieved together and what we must do to provide a secure future for Uefa, the national associations, and football across the continent.

"All of this, and the requests I have received to remain as president, have convinced me that I should seek a further, and final, term of office."

The elections for the four-year term of office take place next year.
