FC Porto's new ground was picked to host the Euro 2004 opening ceremony and the tournament's first match. Named after the home club's nickname, the Dragons, the impressive stadium's transparent roof was built from 280 tonnes of steel.
The venue's height on the east side is equivalent to a 14-storey building.
Fans travelling to matches can use a new subway, constructed for Euro 2004, which connects the city's Campanha train station to the stadium.
Focus on Porto Portugal's main northern city is renowned for its world-famous port wine, produced in the Douro Valley, and hundreds of samples can be tasted at the Solar Vinho do Porto villa.
Named European capital of culture in 2001, Porto has plenty for sightseers including an imposing cathedral and the dramatic artistic interior of the central rail station.
For something more lively, a festival in honour of the city's patron saint, St John, takes place during Euro 2004 on 23-24 June.
Festivities include the lighting of bonfires, a fireworks display over the River Douro and revellers hitting each other playfully with giant leeks or plastic hammers.
