More than one million cubic metres of granite were blasted out of the hillside to make room for the venue.

With two stands at the sides, and a dramatic rocky backdrop at each end, one Uefa official hailed the design as a "work of art."

The south-eastern side of the stadium faces a wall of exposed mountainside which will accommodate a massive TV screen showing action replays.

Braga is the largest Portuguese city north of Porto, and is famed for its Baroque architecture.

Much of the city, nicknamed 'Portugal's Rome', is associated with the church - the cathedral is the country's oldest, and one of its most important religious landmarks.

Many tourists and worshippers head for the church of Bom Jesus do Monte, which offers great views across Braga at the top of a spectacular granite stairway with whitewashed walls.

The region around Braga is the only place in the world that produces vinho verde, a unique wine best drunk chilled.
