Inter Milan keeper Francesco Toldo has announced his retirement from international football following Italy's Euro 2004 exit on Tuesday. Italy crashed out, despite winning their last group game, and Toldo, 32, was the understudy to Gianluigi Buffon.
"I would have liked to have finished my career with a great victory," he said.
"However, even the disappointment of Portugal cannot wipe away 11 years in the international arena," Toldo told the Inter Milan website.
Toldo, who saved three penalties in the Euro 2000 semi-final against Holland, will now concentrate on his Inter duties.
He added: "I had already decided to retire before Euro 2004 but I did not want to announce it then as I refused to put my personal interests ahead of the squad's."
Toldo spent much of his career at Fiorentina but was sold to help pay off the club's debts in 2001.
