Trapattoni failed to guide Italy into the knockout stages at Euro 2004 |
Giovanni Trapattoni has been named as Benfica's new coach - nine days after losing his job with Italy. Trapattoni was replaced by former Juventus coach Marcello Lippi after Italy's first-round exit at Euro 2004.
He fills the vacancy at Benfica, which was created by the exit of Jose Antonio Camacho, who left the Portuguese side to take over at Real Madrid.
Benfica finished second in the league and won the domestic cup last season - their first trophy for eight years.
Trapattoni took charge of Italy in 2000 after a club career that included 20 titles and cups with the likes of Juventus, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.
But he was criticised for his team selections and tactics at Euro 2004 as Sweden and Denmark pipped Italy to qualification from Group C.
