They travelled to Oslo for their first game against the Norwegians.
Striker Jon Dahl Tomasson, soon to join AC Milan, began the scoring in the 23rd minute when he tapped home a Niclas Jensen centre.
Full-back John Arne Riise equalised with a fierce drive after half-time before Tomasson restored Denmark's lead.
The Danes looked set to take all three points before tall Norwegian striker John Carew headed past goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen deep into injury time.
Comfortable wins over Luxembourg and Romania followed, but few could have predicted their shock 2-0 home defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
A good result over main rivals Norway now took on greater importance.
Jesper Gronkjaer's fifth-minute strike proved to be enough on the day and took Morten Olsen's men to the top of the group table.
They beat Luxembourg in their second encounter but drew 2-2 against Romania at home, to leave them needing a draw in the final match away to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
They were sent on their way by a 12th-minute Martin Jorgensen goal.
But just before the break, Elvir Bolic headed past Sorensen for the equaliser.
Bosnia needed a win for any chance of qualification, but Olsen's men held firm to book their berth in Portugal.
