West Ham manager Glenn Roeder is refusing to panic despite his side's precarious position following their defeat at Leeds.

Seth Johnson grabbed the winner against the Hammers, who are now second from bottom.

"I wouldn't use the word 'desperate'," said Roeder.

"For a long time now we have been concerned about the situation, but we have still 11 games to go and there's no need to talk about desperation or us gambling."

Bowyer handled his return well

Freddie Kanoute returned from a lengthy absence and started the game, but the striker was sent off for violent conduct.

And Roeder said he would be talking to the forward about his dismissal after 70 minutes.

"It is very disappointing because Freddie has been out for such a long time - 21 weeks - and he is an important member of the team," added Roeder.

"That was his first start for some time, but now he's going to miss another three games.

"I will have a chat with him about it, but there's a time and a place for that."

Lee Bowyer was booed with every touch on his return to Leeds after leaving for West Ham.

But both managers praised the way he played and handled the match.

"The longer the game went on the stronger he became," said Roeder.

"He played in a lot of pressure situations here at Leeds, including Champions League football when he had been provoked, but I thought he stood up well to what he faced."

Leeds manager Terry Venables saw his side end a run of four Premiership matches without a win.

He said: "Lee is a strong character.

"The crowd made their presence felt, but what was said won't bother him. He will have shrugged that off."

Venables added: "It was a welcome three points. I thought we played excellently."
