Charlton send Baggies bottom
Shaun Bartlett scored the winner for Charlton after 59 minutes

West Brom 0-1 Charlton

Shaun Bartlett's goal increased West Brom's relegation worries and ensured Charlton bounced back from their FA Cup defeat against Fulham.

The game lacked finesse and quality in the final third and it was no surprise that Bartlett's goal came from a set piece.

The South Africa international rose to meet a Claus Jensen free-kick and his header seemed to take a slight deflection off Baggies striker Danny Dichio on its way into the West Brom goal.

With West Ham winning at home to Blackburn, Gary Megson's Baggies are now bottom of the Premiership and their hopes of avoiding relegation seem increasingly forlorn.

Megson accused his players of lacking passion and commitment in their FA Cup defeat against Watford on Saturday.

But they played with great determination against the Addicks, dominating possession, but crucially lacking a cutting edge in the last third.

Megson's team have now won only one of their last 18 league games.

The Baggies forced Charlton keeper Dean Kiely into action after 36 minutes when Ronnie Wallwork headed Jason Koumas' cross from six yards.

But Kiely parried the header and apart from a 30-yard drive by the lively Jason Roberts, the Charlton stopper had little else to do in the opening half.

It was probably the best we have played for a while

Albion were forced into a reshuffle after 50 minutes when central defender Darren Moore limped off.

And nine minutes later Bartlett stunned the home crowd by guiding the ball past Russell Hoult to give the Addicks the lead.

Albion tried to retaliate and referee Andy D'Urso rejected the Baggies' second penalty appeal of the evening after a tackle by Mark Fish on Roberts.

He had earlier incensed Megson when he denied the home team a spot-kick following a collision between Roberts and Richard Rufus.

The home team did come close to an equaliser when substitute Scott Dobie hit the post, but the match ended with West Brom a match closer to increasingly inevitable relegation.
