Lisbie sinks Baggies

Charlton 1-0 West Bromwich Albion

Charlton extended their unbeaten Premiership record to eight games with a hard-fought win over unfortunate West Bromwich Albion.

Kevin Lisbie's lone sixth-minute goal was enough to wrap up the points for Alan Curbishley's men.

But Gary Megson was left ruing his side's inability to take advantage of their plentiful possession, especially in the second half of a fiery, entertaining match.

Key moments
6 mins: Kevin Lisbie gives Charlton the lead
34 mins: Jason Roberts booked after clash with Richard Rufus
67 mins: Steve Dunn waves away West Brom's penalty appeal

West Brom started strongly and Jason Roberts forced Charlton stopper Dean Kiely to save with his feet after just two minutes.

But the Addicks came back well and took the lead on six minutes.

Visiting keeper Russell Hoult had already saved spectacularly from Gary Rowett and Jason Euell, but Lisbie's flicked header from Claus Jensen's corner flew off his fists and into the net.

Scott Parker almost doubled Charlton's advantage on 11 minutes with a thrilling run and shot which forced the overworked Hoult to dive full length to save.

I am sure that West Brom will be disappointed but it's a cruel game

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley

But with one goal separating the teams, Charlton were not comfortable, and Curbishley's side was relieved to see a 20-yard Jason Koumas free-kick hit the woodwork.

The Addicks were even more fortunate after 26 minutes after an amazing scramble where first Roberts, then Daniele Dichio saw goalbound shots blocked.

Parker was then called into action to clear Darren Moore's header as West Brom sought an equaliser.

Roberts then clashed with Richard Rufus on 34 minutes, leaving the Charlton man sprawling, although Steve Dunn brandished a yellow card as the crowd howled for a red.

We haven't dominated a game as much as that this season

West brom boss Gary Megson

West Brom came even closer on the stroke of half-time as Kiely athletically tipped Ronnie Wallwork's shot around the post.

The talk among the fans at half-time, however, was more about Curbishley's argument with Dunn, apparently about the Roberts-Rufus bust-up.

And West Brom were incensed on 67 minutes when Roberts was flattened by his adversary Rufus inside the box, only for Dunn to wave play on.

Megson switched to a 4-3-3 formation, then a 4-2-4, as he desperately tried to salvage a point late on.

But despite a few late chances, the sting had gone from the visitors' attack and Charlton held on.
