Charlton Athletic moved four points clear of the Premiership drop zone with a hard-fought victory over Blackburn Rovers.

Paul Konchesky was the Londoners' hero as they upset a team who had lost only once away in the Premiership all season.

The 21-year-old came on at half-time to help transform the Addicks' fortunes as manager Alan Curbishley altered his formation to match-winning effect.

Konchesky scored the opener with a 25-yard free-kick just before the hour mark.

And after David Thompson had struck an instant equaliser, he served up the corner from which Richard Rufus headed the hosts back in front.

Jason Euell added a third with a rasping drive from 20 yards in injury time to put the gloss on Charlton's second-half show.

The hosts had started with three up front and saw plenty of the ball early on.

But it was Blackburn who looked the more inventive in attack and created the better chances.

The visitors were unlucky to be denied a penalty in the 26th minute when Jon Fortune brought down Andy Cole as the Blackburn striker reached the byline.

But referee Uriah Rennie ruled that Cole had already run the ball out of play and awarded a goal kick.

Charlton's best effort came a minute before the break when Shaun Bartlett flashed a near-post header across goal from Scott Parker's corner.

The Addicks reshuffled their formation at half-time and beefed up their midfield by dropping Jason Euell back from attack.

Blackburn's Egil Ostenstad headed against a post while the hosts were still adjusting, but once they settled, Curbishley's team quickly looked more competitive.

And they went on to take the lead in the 59th minute when former Addick Andy Todd conceded a free-kick with a push on Scott Parker.

Konchesky stepped up to fire a superb 25-yard shot past Alan Kelly, deputising for Brad Friedel in the Blackburn goal.

Charlton's joy was short-lived, however, as Thompson rifled home Cole's lay-off from the edge of the box almost directly from the restart.

The home side then looked increasingly as if the three points were going to elude them as Kevin Lisbie first fired over from six yards and then struck the side-netting after rounding Kelly.

But another set-piece proved Rovers' undoing, as Rufus found space to head home Konchesky's corner with just over 15 minutes to play.

Charlton held out with few further scares to record only their second home win of the Premiership campaign, sealed at the last by the sweetest of finishes from Euell.
