| Sunday, 17 November, 2002, 17:01 GMT Everton edge past Blackburn ![]() Kevin Campbell turns to score for Everton Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Everton Everton's resurgence continued with a fifth successive league win as they beat Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Kevin Campbell's first-half strike settled an eventful game - with Everton's defence forced to resist a powerful late rally from Graeme Souness's side. Goalkeeper Richard Wright was outstanding as the revival under David Moyes took another step forward, cementing fourth place in the Premiership.
Everton, without the injured Mark Pembridge, should have gone ahead within seconds, when Tomasz Radzinski steered Lee Carsley's cross straight at a grateful Brad Friedel. Wright came to Everton's rescue as Andy Cole raced through - and it set up Moyes' side to take the lead after 19 minutes. Carsley was again the creator, finding Campbell on his own eight yards out to slide an easy finish past Friedel.
And Friedel came to Blackburn's rescue again five minutes before half time when he instinctively stuck out a hand to palm away Campbell's header. Blackburn looked lethargic after their midweek Uefa Cup exertions, but they came out for the second half with renewed vigour. They forced a series of corners which came to nothing, although Damien Duff flashed a half-chance over the bar.
David Dunn also powered in a shot, but Everton's elegant defender Joseph Yobo made the block. Everton were being pushed back, and it needed another perfectly-timed tackle by Yobo to halt Egil Ostenstad in full flight. Inevitably, with 10 minutes remaining, Everton sent on Wayne Rooney in an attempt to restore their early supremacy. There were no heroics from the teenager - and Everton relied on their defenders to confirm the win. In stoppage time, David Thompson and Cole both looked certain to grab a last-gasp equaliser. But first David Unsworth and then Wright threw their bodies in the way to secure victory. Blackburn: Friedel, Neill, Short, Johansson, Curtis (Yorke 69), Thompson, Dunn, Tugay, Duff, Cole, Ostenstad. Booked: Short, Johansson, Ostenstad. Everton: Wright, Hibbert, Yobo, Stubbs, Naysmith (Rooney 81), Carsley, Tie Li (Watson 57), Gravesen, Unsworth, Campbell, Radzinski (Weir 89). Booked: Tie Li.
