Defiant Taylor stands tall
Aston Villa's goalkeeper Peter Enckelman is provided with an escort after his dismissal in the 1-0 defeat to Southampton
Enckelman's dismissal was the game's turning point
Aston Villa manager Graham Taylor has brushed aside the hostile reaction shown to him by supporters as his side crashed 1-0 at home to Southampton.

Having failed to score in seven games and managed just six goals all season, Villa are just two points above the relegation zone.

The Midlands club's indifferent start to the new campaign drew another poor attendance to Villa Park and cries for Taylor's head from those supporters that did turn up.

Fans at the Holte End chanted, "We want Taylor out."

"I did hear the chants but you would expect them in the position we are in," said Taylor.

"You are going to get that in this day age. It's as simple as that.

The ref made his decision and you've got to take it on the chin
Graham Taylor

"People have got to take it out on somebody and the manager is invariably the person who will suffer in that way."

The former England coach refused to criticise referee Steve Bennett's decision to send off Peter Enckelman early in the second half after a mix-up with transfer-listed defender Alpay

James Beattie bagged his first goal of the season with the resulting penalty.

Television replays suggested Alpay committed the first offence against Ormerod before he was brought down by Enckelman.

"Alpay had got his arm around him but the referee decided Peter had pulled Ormerod down.

Southampton manager Gordon Strachan
Strachan had an early anniversary present

"You can say all the things you want, but what's the point.

"The ref made his decision and you've got to take it on the chin."

Taylor's misery contrasted with Gordon Strachan's joy - the Scot celebrates his first anniversary in charge of Southampton on Tuesday.

"It was the battle of two sides who had made mediocre starts to the season and it makes you feel better up to the next game.

"After the goal and the sending off we had four or five chances and never took the opportunities but it was a good victory and our form of late has been decent."
