West Brom ended a run of four defeats as Jason Roberts swept home three minutes from time in a frenetic finish to ensure honours were shared in the Midlands derby.

Birmingham had had Olivier Tebily sent off moments earlier when they went ahead against the run of play, Darren Moore scoring a calamitous own goal in the 85th minute.

But two minutes later, the Baggies earned the point they more than deserved when Roberts collected a Neil Clement pass before firing home.

Baggies boss Gary Megson will be feeling more than a little aggrieved that his side did not emerge with a win after having much the better of a match that featured plenty of effort, but little quality.

In a predictably high-tempo first half, the home side dominated possession but it was Birmingham who could have taken the lead.

Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison shot over from close range.

And Stern John's header was only kept out by a point blank save from Russell Hoult, the keeper enhancing his growing reputation.

West Brom's Igor Balis was the outstanding player of the the first half and he was unlucky to see his 18-yard-shot skim wide of Nico Vaesen's right post.

West Brom should have broken the deadlock on the hour, but Vaesen somehow kept out Lee Marshall's right-foot shot with his legs.

And Vaesen again came to the rescue when substitute Scott Dobie raced through on goal.

The lively Roberts continued to cause problems for the Birmingham defence.

And it was no surprise when Tebily - having been booked in the first half - received his marching orders for a cynical foul on the striker.

But moments after losing their French defender, Birmingham took the lead when Hoult spilled Darryl Powell's cross and the ball was deflected in by Moore.

But less than three minutes later the home side hit back through Roberts for a valuable point.
