| Saturday, 24 August, 2002, 15:59 GMT 16:59 UK Charlton off the mark ![]() Bart-Williams draws Charlton level from the spot Bolton 1-2 Charlton Jason Euell's second-half strike handed Charlton manager Alan Curbishley his first win of the season in his 300th game in sole charge of the Addicks. Euell finished off a sweeping Charlton move after 71 minutes as the Londoners came from behind to earn their first points of the new campaign.
Former France star Youri Djorkaeff had given Bolton the lead after just 90 seconds but Charlton drew level before half-time through a Chris Bart-Williams penalty. In the second half the visitors slowly took control of the midfield and Euell's goal gave them only their second win away to Bolton since 1955. Bolton got off to a blistering start and took the lead inside two minutes after Dean Kiely could only parry Paul Warhurst's fierce shot from the edge of the area. The ball looped up in the air and Djorkaeff was on hand to score from all of three yards.
Almost immediately Charlton's luck went from bad to worse as defender Gary Rowett limped off to be replaced by Steve Brown. The Londoners looked unsettled by their poor start and Bolton took charge of the game with Warhurst and Henrik Pedersen both going close. Graham Stuart had to make a hasty clearance from Warhurst's effort, while Pedersen shot wide from a good position. Ricardo Gardner then squandered a free header from Pedersen's corner before, after 22 minutes, Charlton carved out their first chance of the game.
Chris Powell swung in a cross from the left but Jonatan Johansson steered his header well wide. However, they did not have to wait long to get back on terms after Bruno N'Gotty shoved Richard Rufus in the back. Referee Matt Messias immediately awarded a penalty kick and Bart-Williams sent Jussi Jaaskelainen the wrong way from the spot.
Djorkaeff tried to get Bolton going again and fired in a shot that Kiely did well to block with his legs but it was the visitors who finished the stronger. Johansson missed the target from six yards out while Claus Jensen, playing against his former club, and Paul Konchesky both tried their luck from distance. Bolton started the second half brightly and Pedersen nearly got away two minutes after the break, but he was pulled back by Brown. Djorkaeff then saw his free-kick deflected to safety by Chris Powell before Charlton went close through Konchesky.
Charlton were beginning to get hold of the midfield and Euell served notice of his threat when he stung Jaaskelainen's hands with a shot from inside the area. With just under 20 minutes to go the striker gave the Londoners the lead when he got on the end of Stuart's pass and scored from seven yards out. Bolton twice went close to equalising as Dean Holdsworth and Warhurst tried their luck, but both times Kiely pulled of stunning saves to ensure the hosts slipped to their second defeat of the season.
