Steve Brooker scored his first goal in over a year
Steve Brooker scored a controversial late winner to send Bristol City to the top of the Championship table.
Bristol City took a first-half lead through Dele Adebola who poked home after keeper David Marshall had parried Michael McIndoe's shot into his path.
But Norwich scored a second-half equaliser through Darren Huckerby who stroked the ball beyond Adriano Basso from 12 yards out to level.
But Brooker popped up late on heading home Michael McIndoe's cross for 2-1.
Bristol City manager Gary Johnson: "It was a fairytale finish, because Steve (Brooker) has been through an 18-month battle against injury and only just returned from his loan at Cheltenham.
"Everyone at the club knows how hard he has worked after two knee operations -
and this was the perfect reward for him.
"The game could have gone either way, but we kept going to the very end and
now sit top of the Championship with just five games left.
"We are the team everyone has to catch, and it was a terrific boost to clinch
a victory that ends our run of five games without a win."
Norwich manager Glen Roeder: "The referee has made a big mistake in judging that the wrong hand touched the
ball.
"Even the fourth official said it was clearly a Bristol player but added
that there was nothing that he could do about it.
"With luck like that, Bristol are certainties to reach the Premier League -
yet we outplayed them from start to finish.
"The problem is that referees are not accountable for such errors. My players
have given everything, produced some excellent football and have nothing to show
for it."
